Don’t Be Caught Up With the Accounting Software You Use

by Michael Hsu on September 8, 2011

Yo! Our first video blog post here – chatting about how entrepreneurs should focus on the big picture when building their accounting system then slowly work their way down to the details of selecting the right software that fits.

Let it rip in the comments to let us know what you think and if there are any suggestions to help us improve too! Thanks.

Bravo!   Looking forward to more from you in the future!   Great lessons.   I’ll take care of that dirty martini for you.

  • Michelle

Love the vlog!  Great idea using a marker board as a visual.

  • Chris Tanner

    Excellent stuff Michael!

Thanks Michelle – I’ve always loved whiteboards (we have a giant one in the office that’s about 200 sq ft!) and when I saw other people doing whiteboard videos – I fell in love. This was my amateur attempt at it. :D

Thanks Chris – glad you enjoyed it. But you and I know a lot of these processes are changing because of innovative softwares! ;)

Speaking of dirty martinis – you should be there in October to share a drink with me! Do it.

Nice job Michael. Who knew accountants could be so artistic?

    Thanks Kevin!

Doesn’t look amateur to me at all.  As someone else commented above, who knew accountants could be do artistically inclined!  ha!  I’m with you, I love the visual aspect of the white board videos.  Visuals are a great way to keep the attention of your audience and to keep vlogs interesting.  Great job!

Dude, this is really good! You are an artistic teacher. You really explained what Processes are, what a System is, and what Tools are.  We use these terms, but no one really explains what they mean.

When you explain them in one whole post, they all make sense as a whole.

I’ve never referred to a Process as a series of steps… I’m going to steal that one!

Dude Jason. Steal away my friend. I am glad it all worked out and was informative – there’s definitely going to be more down the road. Let me know if you’ve got some ideas too. Or maybe we can get at some together. That’d be rad.

Thanks for the RT love too!

I love your style!  This is a great way to explain the process.. well done! :)

Thanks Scott. This is going to be first of many!

    Hi Michael,
I enjoyed your post. I think a lot of people stop at the software without considering larger picture. Even inside the software, one needs to be familiar, an integrator needs to be aware of a businesses processes to ensure the software is being used on the most regimented way. I like focusing on reports a business uses to help understand te processes required to guarantee repeatable and reliable information being Daley weed in those reports.

From a technology perspective, take a look at screenchomp by trchsmith. It’s a whiteboard video creation software for the iPad. The only one out there which allows you to record both voice a writing, then get the videos out in mp4. Less stupid, and a portable option.

    Cheers,

Brad. You know it. We, too, focus on the information that the entrepreneurs want to obtain – then working our ways backwards to the reports, slice/dice, and the basic accounting needed to get there. Too often do we see entrepreneurs get caught up with the tool they are using that they bend over backwards just to “make it work.” Not the best idea if you ask me.

Thanks for the tech reference! We are definitely going to check it out. Can you say, “more excuse to buy an iPad?” :)

Often, I see entrepreneurs/business owners caught up on the software (tools) but can’t explain to me their processes.  Like Jason, I may have to borrow this one.  Kudos!

Thanks Joyce, glad you liked it.
