Leadership vs. Management

Leadership versus Management

In the words of Peter Drucker, “Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things.”

Management

Envision a group of producers cutting through a jungle – they are the problem solvers – cutting through all the undergrowth, clearing it out. The managers are behind them, sharpening their machetes (making the process more effective,) writing P&Ps, making sure there’s enough money (accounting) to properly allocate resources.

Leader

The leader is the one who climbs the tallest tree, surveys the entire situation, and yells, “Wrong jungle!” Think about it. -excerpted from The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People
